5 Easy Childproofing Tips for your Home - Black&Decker, India

As expectant parents, one of the important things we need to think about is whether our home is safe for a crawling baby or a toddler to move around in. Even if we don’t manage to childproof before the arrival of the baby, we have a few more months of breathing space before that bundle of joy starts moving around and this is a good time to critically assess all parts of our home.

Electrical outlets: Even though most electrical points nowadays come with safety measures that do not allow a child to stick a finger in them, it may still be a good idea to position these above the reach of a young toddler. This is a decision that needs to be made during construction, so if that is not possible, do think of creative ways to cover up such as putting a piece of furniture in front or covering with tape temporarily.

Medications and Poisonous materials: Anything that could be ingested by the child, and prove detrimental to health must be kept out of reach. And this means not in any drawers that can be pulled out too, as that is one of their favourite pastimes.

Furniture and sharp edges: Try to put away items of furniture that are not weighed down well as these might be dangerous when children start pulling themselves up using whatever they can. Also check for sharp edges and cover these with childproofing equipment like bumpers that are specially designed to soften the edges to make them safer.

Safety Gates: Staircases can be a big worry when young babies and toddlers are around. Make it tension free for yourself by installing a safety gate that cannot be opened by children on their own, so that they are free to negotiate the space near it without being at risk.

Doors, windows and balconies: As your crawling baby gets older, keep an eye out for what she can reach. Windows need to be kept closed especially if the bars allow access to the outside. The same goes for checking the safety aspects of doors, as well as balcony grill heights and gaps.

A lot of childproofing activities including installing equipment like a safety gate can be done as a DIY activity by you. Do check out our range of appliances that can help you in this, by dropping in at our website: http://www.blackanddeckerindia.in
